Le Retour de chasse de Diane, commandé en 1729 à François Lemoyne par Abraham Peyrenc de Moras, est l’un des quatre dessus-de-porte du grand salon central de cet hôtel particulier, construit par Jean Aubert, rue de Varenne devenu l’hôtel Biron et actuel musée Rodin.

Vers 1890, il avait été vendu par les Soeurs du Sacré-Coeur, qui occupaient alors les lieux, en même temps que les 18 autres tableaux et éléments de décors aussi bien pour des raisons morales que financières. Dans ce tableau, Diane, assise sur la droite, fait face à trois compagnes de chasse qui lui présentent une biche morte. Diane pointe la scène de sa main droite. Cette acquisition majeure dans l’histoire de cet hôtel particulier, réalisée en juin 2011, s’inscrit dans une longue et complexe opération de reconstitution de ses décors d’origine.
