Pierre de Wissant, Nude Study

Auguste Rodin (1840 -1917)

Circa 1885

H. 29.6 cm ; W. 16 cm ; D. 16.1 cm

This small study, modelled in lively fashion like bozzetti, recalls Pierre de Wissant’s determined attitude. Although its arms were lost in an accident, the swaying movement of its contrapposto twirls the figure around on itself and shows Rodin’s virtuoso modelling skills. He never made preparatory studies on paper for his sculptures, but often expressed his initial idea in sketches like these. This was the method he used for Balzac . Several small, vigorous terracotta studies captured the poses the writer used to strike and guided the sculptor in his elaboration of the final figure.
