The artist who is also a collector, archivist, curator and custodian of his own works has become a familiar figure over the last few years. Rodin was a perfect example. Probably through intuition rather than reflection, he knew how important the things that made up his daily universe would be to the understanding of his oeuvre. He thus kept everything.The tens of thousands of handwritten or printed documents, the books and periodicals that he donated to the French nation at the same time as his sculptures and collections, vividly recall more than 70 years of Rodin’s private, social and artistic life. Thanks to these documents,we gain insight into the very heart of his creative process.
